A Cheap and Easy Way to Raise Food Bowls

How to Create a Raised Chicken Food Bowl Using a Log

Are you tired of your chickens making a mess of their food? We've found an easy and eco-friendly solution that keeps their food cleaner and provides additional benefits. Watch our YouTube video on how we created a raised chicken food bowl using a log from our homestead and follow the steps below to do it yourself!

Step-by-Step Guide:

Step 1: Find a Suitable Log The log should be big enough to support the food bowl and tall enough to raise it off the ground. We had plenty of logs to choose from on our homestead.

Step 2: Dig a Hole Next, dig a hole deep enough to set the log securely into the ground. The hole should be deep enough to keep the log upright and stable, but not so deep that the log sits too low. I recommend a hole that’s about 6-8 inches deep, depending on the size of your log.

Step 3: Set the Log in the Ground Place the log into the hole and pack the soil around it to keep it firmly in place. Make sure the log is level and not too tall for your chickens.

Step 4: Place the Food Bowl on Top With the log securely in place, set the food bowl on top. The elevated food bowl is now out of the reach of the chickens' scratching and stays much cleaner. Plus, it’s at a comfortable height for them to eat from.

Bonus Benefits:

Decomposing Log: The log will eventually start to decompose, which is actually a great benefit! As it breaks down, it will attract bugs and insects, providing an additional source of food for your chickens. It’s a natural and sustainable way to enhance their diet.

No Cost: This solution didn’t cost anything because we used materials we already had on hand. It’s a great example of how you can repurpose items around your homestead to solve everyday problems.

Quick and Easy: The entire process was very quick and easy. It took less than 15 minutes to find the log, dig the hole, and set everything up. It’s a simple DIY project that anyone can do.

This raised food bowl setup has been working wonderfully for our chickens. Their food stays cleaner and they seem to enjoy pecking around the base of the log for any bugs that might be hiding there.

Why You Should Try This Method

If you have chickens or other poultry and you’re tired of dealing with messy food bowls, I highly recommend giving this method a try. It’s a practical and eco-friendly solution that benefits both you and your feathered friends.
