This morning, while collecting eggs, I stumbled upon something a little unusual—a super tiny egg! Now, who’s egg could this be?
(It wasn’t me! – says the chicken in my head.)
The egg was so small it could fit perfectly on a teaspoon. Just to show you how tiny it was, I placed it next to a Toonie for size comparison. Pretty small, right?
What is this tiny egg, you ask? It's known as a fairy egg.
What is a Fairy Egg?
A fairy egg is a rare occurrence in the chicken world. It's a small egg that typically doesn’t have a yolk inside. These eggs are often laid by young hens who are just starting to lay or by older hens nearing the end of their laying cycle. Fairy eggs can also happen if a hen experiences stress or a disruption in her normal egg-laying routine.
While it might look a bit odd, there’s absolutely no need to worry if you come across one of these cute little eggs in your coop. It's just nature’s way of showing that even chickens can have an off day every now and then!
